5 Common Molds You’ll Find in the State of Florida

Mold growth is common in nearly every state in the US.  However, some states are more prone to this unsightly problem than others.  Mold prefers humid, wet areas and the state of Florida is no stranger to those issues.  Flooding is one of the most frequent hazards in Florida.  

And that leads to a lot of homes and offices having mold infestation as the wet areas coupled with the hot weather are perfect breeding grounds for mold and mildew. 5 Types of Mold to be Aware of in Florida

It has been estimated that there are more than 100,000 types of mold worldwide.  Yet while some are completely harmless, there are several that you want to be aware of and watch out for.  The following are the 5 most common molds you’ll find in Florida:

• Alternaria – this dark, velvety green mold is characterized by its soft texture.  You’ll most likely notice mold growth after a pipe has been leaking or you’ve had significant water damage.  You’ll usually find Alternaria in basements and bathrooms.  As a serious allergen, it can irritate the mouth and nose and trigger asthma attacks also.

• Aspergillus – this variety typically grows in HVAC systems and in those areas that are water damaged.  It can cause pulmonary infections and trigger asthmatic reactions.  So, we recommend having your HVAC ducts checked and cleaned, unless you’re okay with toxic mold spores floating around in the air you breathe.

• Cladosporium – this brownish or olive-green mold has a suede-like texture and the unique characteristic of being able to survive in both cold and warm conditions.  You may even discover that Cladosporium is growing in your carpeting, upholstery, and other areas of your home.

• Penicillium – this is one of the more common forms of mold found in the home.  It has a velvety bluish-green color, typically grows on expired foods, and can be dangerous if it gets eaten.  It will often start growing after flooding and leads to allergy-like symptoms such as those of respiratory infections.

• Stachybotrys – commonly referred to as “black mold”, Stachybotrys is one of the most dangerous and toxic molds found in Florida homes.  As a side-effect of water damage, it causes flu-like symptoms and can be fatal for children, the elderly, pets, and people with compromised immune systems.
