As mold inspection specialists in the greater Miami-Dade County area, we get asked a lot of questions about this common menace to Miami area homeowners.  Mold is a major problem here in southern Florida and other areas of the US as well.  Although the formation of a mold is a natural process, there are roughly 100 different types found in nature, the vast majority of which aren’t found in homes.  However, it is an unwanted guest for business and residential property owners alike.

What is the Formation of Mold attributed to?

Mold typically forms when conditions are ideal.  In order for mold to form the following conditions must be in place:

  • it must have access to oxygen
  • temperatures must be above 39° F
  • there must be carbon-containing or organic materials present (mold feeds on these)
  • there must be water present

Mold’s thrives when moisture is present and temperatures are between 77° and 86°F.  So if your home’s interior is warm and humid or you’ve recently experienced flooding or a plumbing leak, these conditions are conducive to mold growth.

Where does Mold typically grow?

Places with a lot of moisture are ideal breeding grounds for mold.  If your home has been flooded or if you have pipes, a roof, or windows that are leaking, mold will start to form unless the proper measures are taken to prevent it.  Mold often grows on different surfaces.  Although it grows best on cardboard and other paper products, ceiling tiles, and wood products, it can also grow on drywall, fabrics, and paints.

Can You tell if Mold is dangerous just by looking at it?

Unfortunately, there’s no way you can visibly examine mold and determine whether or not it’s dangerous or harmful.  However, mold inspection specialists can use advanced testing methods to identify the types of molds in your home or business.  Furthermore, they are equipped and trained to know what types pose a threat and what steps must be taken to eliminate mold when it is present in your home or business. They understand the need to quickly clean the interiors from any mold infestation and have the necessary skills and tools to complete the task.

Can Mold cause Health Problems?

It’s uncertain if there is a direct link between illnesses and mold.  However, research has shown that there is an association between certain health symptoms and the exposure to mold.  These include coughing and wheezing as well as triggering asthma attacks.  However, there is no concrete evidence or proof that mold is the direct cause of these issues.
