Like any homeowner, you want to make sure that your home and your air quality is the best possible for the health and welfare of your family. But here in South Florida, we know that there are some issues that are just inherent to our subtropical climate. The presence of mold is often one of them.

Signs of a Possible Mold Infestation in Miami

There are a few signs that you may have mold growing in your home. You may see it but then again you may not. But regardless of whether you can see it or not, it can affect your health and should be removed as soon as possible.

These are some signs that there is a chance that mold is growing in your home:

  • You have recently had a water leak or experienced flooding in your home. Mold is adept at living under your flooring and inside your walls and can commonly be found behind walls near leaking pipes. Look for any bubbles or cracks in your paint or wallpaper or any bulging or warps in your walls. If you see water stains and discoloration, mold may the culprit.
  • Excessive moisture in your home — if you have seen a lot of condensation on the interior of your doors and windows, this can lead to a mold problem. Because mold requires moisture to grow, humid areas are breeding grounds for mold growth.
  • Health symptoms — one of the signs of mold exposure are sneezing, runny nose, coughing, wheezing, watery eyes, eye redness, itchy eyes, and skin irritations or rashes. If you find these symptoms are worse when you are inside but go away when you are outside, household mold may be the culprit.
  • Musty odors — a strong indicator of indoor mold growth is an odd musty odor, particularly if the house has been closed up for a while.
  • Telltale signs of mold — mold doesn’t have to be black. It can be various colors. Any sign of mold should be dealt with immediately.

If you suspect an infestation in your home, you should arrange for a mold inspection. Even if you don’t see mold, if you have had any of the above circumstances, a mold test will reveal if you have an elevated level and where it’s located.

Having a mold inspection is also helpful before you purchase a new home, especially if the seller has disclosed a prior leak or flooding incident. Even if you don’t suspect mold growth, in particular, you may wish to have an inspection just for purposes of testing your environmental air quality.

Hire a Professional

A mold inspection should be done by a professional. Although there are home mold test kits, the results are often misleading or just wrong. They also don’t enable a visual inspection done by a professional. Some mold problems are often not apparent to people without training.
