The 7 Weirdest Things We’ve Found While Inspecting Homes
When I walk into a house for a home inspection, I never know what I will find. An inspection can look normal from the outside, but the inside can tell a very different story.
Over the years, we have found things that surprise buyers, sellers, and even us.
Some of these finds are funny. Some are unsafe. A few are just plain strange.
I will share the seven weirdest things we have found while inspecting homes.
1. Hidden Rooms Behind Walls
Yes, hidden rooms are real. We have found rooms sealed behind drywall and shelves. Some owners forgot they existed. Others never knew.
These spaces often come from old renovations. A past owner may have closed off a room to save money or hide damage. Hidden rooms can cause issues with air flow, wiring, and pests.
A hidden room can also change a home’s value and layout. Buyers should know every space that exists.
2. Live Animals Living Inside the Walls
Animals inside walls happen more than people think. We have found raccoons, snakes, and even chickens (That’s right, chickens) living in wall cavities.
Animals enter through roof gaps or broken vents. Once inside, they build nests and leave waste. This creates health risks and bad smells.
If animals live in the walls, damage is already there. Wiring, insulation, and wood are often chewed or broken.
3. Electrical Wires Spliced With Tape and Hope
One of the most dangerous things we find is bad wiring. We have seen wires twisted together and wrapped with duct tape. No box. No cover. No safety.
These wiring messes are a fire hazard. Electrical connections must be inside proper boxes. Tape alone does not protect wires.
Bad wiring can also fail inspections and delay home sales. It always needs a licensed electrician to fix it.
4. Toilets That Drain Straight Into the Yard
This one shocks people. We have found toilets that do not connect to a sewer or septic system. Instead, waste drains into the yard or a shallow pit.
It is a serious health risk. It also breaks local codes and laws.
If waste does not go to a proper system, repairs are not optional. They are required before a sale can move forward.
5. Fake Structural Supports
We have seen wooden beams placed just for show. Some were nailed to nothing. Others were holding zero weight.
These fake supports give a false sense of safety. Real structural issues may be hidden behind them.
If a beam does not connect to the structure, it does not support anything. It can lead to sagging floors and roof problems.
6. Entire Homes Wired Backwards
Hot and neutral wires are reversed throughout the house. Outlets look normal but act wrong.
This can damage appliances and increase the risk of electric shock. Many owners never know until a skilled home inspector completes an inspection.
Correct wiring keeps people safe. Reversed wiring needs repair before moving in.
7. Personal Items Left Inside Walls and Attics
We have found love letters, toys, tools, and even old cash hidden in walls and attics. Some were placed there on purpose. Others fell during past work.
While these finds can be funny, they also show the quality of past work. Loose items inside walls can block vents or damage wiring.
Hidden items often point to rushed or careless repairs.
What These Strange Finds Teach Us About Homes
Every home has a past. Some stories are odd. Some are risky. All deserve attention.
Each discovery helps owners and buyers understand real risks before they grow into costly problems.
A good inspection brings these hidden issues to the surface so people can move forward with clear facts and peace of mind.
Staying alert to these hidden issues helps you spot problems early, avoid costly repairs, and keep your home safe.
